Structured as a complementary social and historical companion piece to John Ford's final western Cheyenne Autumn (1964), this documentary short intersperses clips from the big-screen epic with background information about the Northern Cheyenne Exodus of 1878–1879 and contrasts it with life on the Cheyenne reservation in 1964, as a tribal chief, a tribal beauty queen, and a tribal adolescent take a drive along the route of the 19th-century trek.

Slick gambler James Wylie is apprehended by the law and given the option to forgo a prison sentence if he poses as a bandit. His mission is to uncover the identity of the Poet, a notorious outlaw who has been holding up bank-owned stagecoaches and leaving verses at the crime scenes to taunt the authorities. The main character of the film is Paunvere tailor Jorh Adniel Kiir. Two young seamstresses, Juuli and Maali, arrive in Paunvere. Carleton and Genevieve are actors who become stranded in a western town. Carleton finds work at a ranch, where he helps the owner and his granddaughter defend their enterprise against cattle rustlers.

A ranch owner gives the Cheyenne Kid $1000 and sends him off to buy cattle. At the same time he fires a ranch hand and that hand rides ahead and alerts Jeff Baker about the $1000. Bakers' henchman are too late to get the Kid but they kill the rancher paid by the Kid. The Sheriff then arrests the Kid claiming he murdered the rancher to get the money back and that Baker said he then lost it at his gambling table.
